High sustainability ambitions:
The Burlian at 80 New Bond Street - a mixed-use retail and office project in the heart of London’s West End - is designed by the award-winning Orms Architects.
Involving a refurbishment of the building (previously known as Burlian House), with part demolition and reconstruction, the project targeted the environmental certification “BREEAM: Excellent”, with further ambitions of achieving “Outstanding”. It also aimed for “WELL Platinum Ready” and “Wired & Smart Score Platinum”. These certifications highlight the project's commitment to superior environmental performance and occupant wellbeing.
A key focus of the project was minimizing its carbon footprint. Thus, by choosing refurbishing instead of redeveloping, approximately 800kgs of CO2 per m² was saved. Additionally, materials (like our high-quality GRC for the façade cladding) were carefully selected using advanced carbon modeling software, to ensure the best materials and fabric buildups were selected to reduce the embodied carbon.
The commitment to lower the project’s carbon footprint is further underlined by a pledge, by Hines, to offset the next 30 years of operational carbon.
Curves That Make The Burlian Stand Out:
The Burlian's striking design and curved facade will undoubtedly get people to look up as they pass by, taking in the beautiful architecture. The curved facade elements not only enhance the building’s unique aesthetic, adding to The Burlians distinctive character, but also demonstrate the versatility and high quality of our GRC.
The ability to create such complex shapes is a hallmark of our team’s expertise and our GRC’s properties, such as formability, durability and it’s lightweight and thin profile.
All elements are bespoke, created specifically to bring the vision of the building to life. Additionally, the GRC used in this project is designed to take maintenance loads into account, including abseiling loads, ensuring both durability and ease of upkeep.
For this project, we have produced 179 bespoke GRC elements in approximately 85 variants, covering a total of 849m² (unfolded). These elements, crafted with precision and care, are designed to meet the exacting standards of contemporary architecture, without the need for on-site modifications.
Incorporating these advanced materials and design techniques, The Burlian, at 80 New Bond Street, stands as a prime example of how modern construction can blend aesthetic appeal with environmental responsibility, borne by a strong commitment to sustainability.
