Classic and timeless architecture

When the construction of Copenhagen's metro started in the 1990s, architects from KHR Architects had a clear wish to design a metro with a durable architectural expression that would appear classic and timeless. This required materials which after 20 years would not appear worn or outdated. Glassfibre reinforced concrete fulfilled this wish with its durability of more than 100 years.

Wall cladding with high demands

BB fiberbeton delivered GRC elements to the wall cladding for 8 of the metro stations. BB fiberbeton delivered more than 4.000 GRC elements in over 220 variants.

In addition to the architectural expression, there were several technical considerations when choosing materials. Firstly, there were requirements for the sound technical specifications of the material since the wall cladding could not interfere with radio signals. Additionally, there were high demands for the dimension, weight, and thickness of the elements. Therefore, several elements were inspected and weighed before delivery.

The mounting system is designed to make it possible to disassemble individual elements when they need to inspect cables, and such located behind the wall elements. This is the case for all elements above the sliding glass doors, which are made with embedded steel brackets so that they can be opened when the installations need to be inspected.

GRC was also chosen based on the material's great resistance to vandalism, blows or the like. The surfaces are treated with a traditional anti-graffiti system, which makes it possible to wash graffiti off the elements.

Durable, lightweight, formable

GRC cladding

Through design and manufacturing we help architects, entrepreneurs, and builders create unique, durable, and sustainable facades. Whether you are starting construction on a new build or embarking on a renovation project, GRC is suitable for both.

Glassfibre reinforced concrete (GRC or GFRC) is incredibly versatile and grants you an architectural design freedom with almost endless possibilities. With the formability of GRC you can achieve any geometry and with a surface designed for your specific project. GRC is a lightweight material and our cladding elements are typically only 12 mm. Thus, making it easier to work with and transport whilst also easing the load on buildings.

GRC is an excellent facade material if durability and sustainability is of great concern and importance. GRC is durable for more than 100 years without any technical maintenance and it does not dent, rot, corrode, nor burn (class A material). With a sustainable material and an environmentally friendly production without toxic materials, GRC elements from BB fiberbeton are ideal for environmental certifications, such as LEED, DGNB, and BREEAM.

GRC is made of white cement and fine aggregates and reinforced with glassfibre. Elements are produced using a special spray-technique that allows for a low water/cement-ratio, a low thickness, and a high strength.
