Total renovation of residential towers

The three 15 story residential towers of Sorgenfrivang II underwent an extensive renovation both internally and externally.

The high-rises were erected in late 1950’s and represent a significant landmark in the area.

The project included a thorough renovation of the external facade, including new balconies.

Formable GRC

GRC was chosen for this project for various reasons. First and foremost, it was due to the formability of the material, which makes it ideal for renovating, as it is possible to preserve the original architecture with columns and beams. Secondly, GRC was chosen based on its sustainable properties which in turn made it possible to achieve the DGNB certification.

Elements from BB fiberbeton contribute to the DGND certification as the elements are extremely durable and need no technical maintenance.

Furthermore, the consumption of energy in the manufacturing process is very low.

For this project, BB fiberbeton delivered approx. 13.000 GRC elements, corresponding to around 20.000 m2 GRC.

The elements are 12 mm in thickness and the mounting solution is tailored to the project.

For this project, the elements are mounted with a combination of our FA1000®-system, a unique mounting system developed by BB fiberbeton, embedded stud frames, and embedded steel brackets. These mounting solutions all allow for an easy installation and concealed fixing.

The elements were coloured in BBf no.01 standard white and BBf no.04 light grey.

DGNB certification

Sorgenfrivang II is DGNB certified with a gold medal.

This project is the first renovation project in Denmark rewarded with this certification. DGNB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen / German Sustainable Building Council) is an internationally applicable certification system for sustainable building.

GRCA GRC2023 Award winner

BB fiberbeton A/S entered the project for nomination in the "Best use of GRC in a renovation project"-category of the GRCA Awards Ceremony, May 2023.

Sorgenfrivang II won the GRCA GRC2023 Award, having been chosen by a panel of external judges, among 8 other nominated projects from Full Members of GRCA.

Durable, lightweight, formable

GRC cladding

Through design and manufacturing we help architects, entrepreneurs, and builders create unique, durable, and sustainable facades. Whether you are starting construction on a new build or embarking on a renovation project, GRC is suitable for both.

Glassfibre reinforced concrete (GRC or GFRC) is incredibly versatile and grants you an architectural design freedom with almost endless possibilities. With the formability of GRC you can achieve any geometry and with a surface designed for your specific project. GRC is a lightweight material and our cladding elements are typically only 12 mm. Thus, making it easier to work with and transport whilst also easing the load on buildings.

GRC is an excellent facade material if durability and sustainability is of great concern and importance. GRC is durable for more than 100 years without any technical maintenance and it does not dent, rot, corrode, nor burn (class A material). With a sustainable material and an environmentally friendly production without toxic materials, GRC elements from BB fiberbeton are ideal for environmental certifications, such as LEED, DGNB, and BREEAM.

GRC is made of white cement and fine aggregates and reinforced with glassfibre. Elements are produced using a special spray-technique that allows for a low water/cement-ratio, a low thickness, and a high strength.
