Kviberg Crematorium

A GRC facade with concave shapes

This project poses an unusual challenge for architects that have to design a building that fulfills the threefold function of a crematorium. The building has to satisfy the technical requirements of the almost industrial cremation process, while simultaneously creating a pleasant work environment for employees and offering a respectful and comfortable place for loved ones to say goodbye.

The crematorium consists of two conjoined buildings, the new modern crematorium and the old chapel. For the new crematorium, architects from Erseus designed a building that feels light and open with a GRC facade characterised by its concave shapes. The GRC facade elements are coloured grey so not to compete with the brick facade of the adjacent chapel. The juxtaposition between the light and experimental expression of the modern crematorium and the heavier and forceful look of the older chapel creates a visually interesting area for employees and visitors alike.

Formable & lightweight GRC

GRC was specifically chosen for this project based on the formable and lightweight quality of the material. These qualities made it possible to design and create the interesting concave shapes in the characteristic facade.

BB fiberbeton manufactured 913 facade elements, corresponding to 1.123 m2 of GRC. The elements are mounted with our FA1000® system, illustrating how the unique mounting system can be used not only for square cassettes, but also for other geometries. This mounting solution is modified to the particular project and the hidden installation gives the facade a harmonious expression.

An award-winning architecture

The crematorium in Kviberg won numerous awards for its architecture, including Per and Alma Olsson’s prize for Architecture of the Year 2018 and the prize for Architecture of the Year 2019 from the magazine Rum. Furthermore, the project won the architecture award from Swedens Arhictects Västra Götaland and the jury found a determining factor to be the building’s “fine-tuned calmness, material feeling, and fine details”.

Durable, lightweight, formable

GRC cladding

Through design and manufacturing we help architects, entrepreneurs, and builders create unique, durable, and sustainable facades. Whether you are starting construction on a new build or embarking on a renovation project, GRC is suitable for both.

Glassfibre reinforced concrete (GRC or GFRC) is incredibly versatile and grants you an architectural design freedom with almost endless possibilities. With the formability of GRC you can achieve any geometry and with a surface designed for your specific project. GRC is a lightweight material and our cladding elements are typically only 12 mm. Thus, making it easier to work with and transport whilst also easing the load on buildings.

GRC is an excellent facade material if durability and sustainability is of great concern and importance. GRC is durable for more than 100 years without any technical maintenance and it does not dent, rot, corrode, nor burn (class A material). With a sustainable material and an environmentally friendly production without toxic materials, GRC elements from BB fiberbeton are ideal for environmental certifications, such as LEED, DGNB, and BREEAM.

GRC is made of white cement and fine aggregates and reinforced with glassfibre. Elements are produced using a special spray-technique that allows for a low water/cement-ratio, a low thickness, and a high strength.
